Marlow and The Great War - Finale Event
We all know that WW1 ended in 1918. Actually that was the Armistice. Officially the war ended between Britain and Germany at the signing of the Peace Treaty in 1919.
Over the past 5 years members of the Marlow Remembers WW1 Association have been researching the war and its effect on Marlow both with the loss of service personnel and the trauma on families plus the overall effect on the Home Front, eg, businesses, schooling and shortages.
On Saturday 8 June 2019 from 11am to 4pm the Association, in conjunction with the Marlow Museum and Marlow Society, held Marlow and The Great War - Finale Event at the All Saints Church Hall on the Causeway, Marlow. The event was attended by Sir Henry Fletcher, the Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire. Entry was FREE.
The stories of WW1 battles, lists of those who did not return and details of the research carried out was on display.
There was also a wide and interesting collection of items from the war on display, which John Hilton (pictured below with Andy Ford) brought along and treated visitors to the stories behind them.
As the event title suggests, this was the conclusion of hours of work by the dedicated team of volunteers who recorded the local men either buried abroad or in the area. In the latter cases graveside commemorations have been held as well as planting of crosses and wreath laying on Remembrance Day.
Occasional guided walks, usually as part of the Chilterns Walking Festival, are still held to the WW1 Training Trenches at Marlow Common. For details ask at the Marlow Museum at Court Garden SL 7 2AE open Wednesday and weekend afternoons (seasonal variation - visit www.marlowmuseum.uk for more information).

Letters from a Medmenham Soldier
We arranged an exhibition between 22 October and 23 November in St Peter and St Paul Church, Medmenham of the wartime letters of John 'Charlie' Hold. Charlie lived in Medmenham before the War and served in France from May 1916 until he was killed in action in December 1917.
There is an archive of more than 90 letters that he wrote to his family that has been preserved in Leeds University Library Special Collections. We have transcribed the letters and published them.
Copies of the letters are available from Marlow Museum. Alternatively please email us and we will send you a copy.
