The Bucks Military Museum Trust came to Marlow on Saturday 18 February with their Roadshow at the invitation of the Marlow Remembers WW1 Association. The day event was hosted by the Marlow Royal British Legion and comprised displays by the two principals plus the Centre for Bucks Studies from Aylesbury.

Some 30 people attended and were clearly delighted with the displays and the helpful stewards. Several visitors were anxious to learn about their earlier family members and the BMMT database proved to be very successful (see pictures). The Roadshow has previously toured the county and attracted interest wherever displayed.

Wethered Brewery in World War One

During the War, part of the local Wethered Brewery switched to producing munitions for the Army on the Western Front. The archives of the Brewery are held in store in Aylesbury and we worked our way through them to find out what they tell us about this fascinating part of the brewery and town's history. We shared the results of our research at two key events in the autumn.

17-Oct-2016

On Monday 17 October, we gave a talk on the results of our research into the Brewery during the First World War. This was at 7.30pm at Liston Hall, Chapel Street and formed part of the Marlow Society Local History Group's ongoing programme of local history talks.

Frederick Septimus Kelly lived in Bisham before the War and enlisted shortly after the conflict broke out. He served in Gallipoli and then on the Western Front where he was killed in the final stages of the Battle of the Somme.

Kelly was a celebrated oarsman who won a gold medal at the Olympic Games in 1908 and then rowed regularly on the Thames when he moved to Bisham. He is commemorated on the memorial in Marlow Rowing Club.

He was also a composer whose music has gained increasing recognition over the last few years. His Elegy for String Orchestra, written at Gallipoli in memory of his friend the poet Rupert Brooke, was performed at the BBC Proms in 2014 to mark the anniversary of the start of the War.

To celebrate the life of this highly talented local man, we joined up with the local musical ensemble, Chiltern Camerata to hold a concert in memory of Kelly. This was held on the 100th anniversary of his death on 12 November at 7.30pm at All Saints Church, Marlow. The programme consisted of music by Kelly and some of his contemporaries, as well as readings from his diary. Tickets went on sale over the summer and many joined us for this unique commemoration of Marlow's finest composer.

Remembering the Battle of the Somme 1-2 July 2016

On Friday 1 July, we arranged for an audience of 70 people to watch the original film of The Battle of the Somme that was first shown in cinemas across the country in the summer of 1916. We followed the showing with a short and moving commemorative ceremony held on The Causeway. On Saturday 2 July, we arranged an exhibition on The Causeway on the Battle of the Somme and the Marlow men who fought there. Over 200 people visited the exhibition, including a number of local people who had relatives who had fought and died in the conflict. Both during and after the event, we helped a number of local people find out more about their relatives involved in the battle. The exhibition was also visited by many people from outside the town, including a busload of Hungarian schoolchildren who happened in Marlow that day!
